Who We Are

The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped (KSH) is a private charity founded on 23.05.1971 under the Law No. 24 for the year 1962 and its Amendments, pertaining to clubs and welfare associations. It is the first charitable Society in the State of Kuwait that renders services to children with disabilities at no cost.

The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped was founded for the purpose of providing services to children with severe disabilities, to ease the burden from their families, alleviate the suffering of parents and guide them towards proper educating and training their children, so that they are included in the society

The Society was established by a number of devoted volunteers who have been keen on providing services for these children, at the time when such care was not available in Kuwait except for the Social Care Homes of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.

These staunch and committed people have worked tirelessly, sparing no resources or effort in fulfilling the material and emotional needs of children with disabilities. Some have worked full time to collect donations in order to improve the quality of services provided for them. Others have continuously made their voices heard in international arenas, calling for equality of these children with their peers, acknowledging their rights and vesting them with the opportunity to prove themselves as active members of society.

Some others have selflessly given their time, dedication and unconditional love.

Story of the Beginning

A history of the beginning was recorded in the hearts of loyal women who loved goodness and self-denial and wanted to provide physical and rehabilitation therapy and care for persons with disabilities for more than fifty years. As for the place, it was in one of old Kuwaiti houses that the Society’s march began ... an unassuming old house, limited capabilities, untiring boredom, uncompromising forearms and strong united resolve that does not wait for wages or thanks from the servants but to seek the pleasure of Lord.

The Kuwait Society for the Handicapped started operating in 1971 by taking in thirty children with disabilities. Its primary objective laid in attending to what had been overlooked by governmental institutions namely creating a private charity institution providing care for children with severe and multiple disabilities, shining a ray of hope for them, driving them to live life to the fullest and asserting their capability of being included into society by providing to them all kinds of care and services, like medical, psychological, social, educational and rehabilitation.

The notion of founding and establishing the Society began with two highly regarded and reputed ladies, Dr Munira Abdul Wahab Al-Qatami and Mrs. Munira Khaled Al-Mutawa who both received their higher education outside Kuwait and have been exposed in those countries to the latest scientific knowledge and advancements in the field of disability.

They were united by a strong desire to serve their fellow citizens, especially upon coming in touch with children with profound disabilities at that time, together with the lack of services and resources. They proposed an idea of establishing a private charitable institution to care for children with severe disabilities, the idea that was hailed and welcomed by many, most notable of whom was Mr. Abdul Rahman Salem Al-Atiqi, the Minister of Finance at that time, Mrs. Moudhi Sultan Al-Eissa and a group of 28 founding members.
